Default Kelly Flats - mid afternoon run - 6/20/13

Tried to meet up with another board member for a quick run through Kelly. I brought along a client, for who we recently did an SAS, lift, dual cases, gearing, lockers, wheels/tires, body armor, and a winch. Good thing I was able to talk him into going as I was never able to actually meet up the other board member. I haven't wheeled up through Kelly in years, and the last time I had, I just remember putting my rig at the time on it's side in the Chutes. So needless to say, I was excited to get out and play and see if I would do it again.

After a quick morning run to my powder coater, we were able to head out of Longmont right at noon.

We arrived at the trail head after a stop for fuel around 1:45pm. My client (Jeff) aired down (I dragged mine so it was already set) and we were ready to start by 2pm.

There really isn't much to the trail until you reach Heart Attach Hill, but Jeff was able to find at least something to flex on:

    Good old Heart Attach Hill:

    Jeff coming up HAH:

Then we finally reached the chutes.

I truly forgot how much fun and how many different lines the Chutes had to offer.

Jeff was a pansy and didn't want to chance any body damage, something about it being a new rig and new driver, so I handed him the keys to my rig and told him to get used to driving.

After a lap or two each, we turned back toward the trail head. Even with the fire damage, it is beautiful around there

On the way back, I noticed that my tires are pretty sticky:

Didn't take many photos on the way out. Here are a couple of Jeff flexing out his 4Runner. Thinking that letting him drive mine boosted is confidence a little:

    Coming down HAH:

It was a fun day. Sorry we missed you NativeTaco. Catch up with you next time!

Nice pix! I've been by the area multiple times, I've looked at satellite pix of it - but I've never been TO it yet. These pix give a decent idea - thx.

Great pix/report! I totally forgot about the chutes. When we were there a couple years ago (to spectate, not drive through) people were messing their stuff up left and right. You made it look easy!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. For those of you who haven't been to the area, take the trip. Short drive up the Poudre, and can be easily run along with Sevenmile at the same time.

Lol, really? Never thought of it that way before. I mean what's the worst that could happen? Something might break? Everything is fixable. Besides, it's just metal... (ok, I guess there is that fabricator part )

Nice pictures. Heart Attack Hill looks pretty steep from the pictures, and I wouldn't take my Jeep through the chutes, It looks too close to body damage to me!

Have to be careful in the chutes, but you can do it. I took an "88" Dodge Ramcharger though there with no damage and was only running 31 inch tires on it at that time. Friend of mine was with me and took his blazer though as well without any damage.

Both have bypasses, which is why I encourage everyone to head up and check out this trail system. Has something for everyone. Then just a few miles up the canyon you could drive through Sevenmile which is VERY mild. Just a few water crossings really.

The Chutes have changed over the years. A couple sections swallowed my 37's easily, and the area seemed narrow even for my mini truck. It was probably the most technical thing I have done this season since my last Indy trip. I honestly don't think I would want to exert the energy or waste the amount of time it would take trying to get a fairly stock, full sized rig through there. Not saying it couldn't be done, just that I wouldn't want to have any part of it.

Has been a long time since I have had the Ramcharger, or been on Kelly Flats for that matter. Sometimes I forget just how long I have been wheeling and how much trails and vehicles have changed.

Great pics and report, thanks!! I've never run that trail but it looks like a lot of fun. I love the "Toyota" truss on your front axle. the whole truck is awesome.

I did all but the chutes without sliders or skids and was just fine. The chutes will require both though, but as stated above, there is an easy bypass. I really want to try it but my wheelbase is long and I only have 33" tires
