Solar Eclipse?

I was surprised at how little effect it had to the naked eye even at the ring of fire stage which barely dimmed the sunlight. Very cool to see which I would have missed but for the generosity of a guy there with his son. Many years ago (70's,early 80's?) I saw a full solar eclipse while working as a welder. We doubled the glass from the helmets to watch and the sun went dark for a few minutes which is what I expected this time.
