    Default ticking noise

Dang it My sons truck developed a weird ticking noise, now I have to dig into that and figure it out

    96 Toy PU, 22RE
Ticking sound is coming from cylinders 3 or 4 and does not sound like an exhaust leak. It is not a rod or valve. Trying to diagnose in the dark and cold last night did not work
Gonna pull it into the garage today and start the adventure.

Hoping for an exhaust gasket leak or O2 bung. No CEL showing
Not my idea of fun for today, I had other things planned

Well, you already named the exhaust leak. My first suggestion when you said ticking noise was going to be that it sounds like the plastic timing chain guide, but wrong part of the engine.

Good luck with that. I am curious to know what it turns out to be.

Kinda of tough to make the kid work on it, when he is away at college.

I am going to take the header off tomorrow and see if it is the gasket, we found some gasket like material laying on the frame in the motor mount. Not sure how that could have happened, everything is tight.
Hoping it is not internal. If it is the truck might get sold.
That would suck, he has put alot of money into it. Locker, armor, engine work, stereo, exhaust, bumpers etc

Not too hard or pricy to find another 22RE, but the price is sometimes hard to come up with. A 22RE swap takes about a day and both Yota Yard and JimsGotParts have a slew of used 22RE engines.

I have found the same thing with the exhaust manifold gaskets. They will were out and everything remains tight due to the remaining gasket material. They still will leak where the gasket is missing. More of a PITA job that anything else. Hopefully that is all it is.

2 blown gaskets!!! The AIR port gasket was in 2 pieces and the manifold gasket was de-laminating. Hit Toyota tomorrow for new gaskets and button it up.

The AIR gaskets were brittle and fell apart with the slightest pressure. Have to tap one thread on the header flange and done

Nice to hear on the gaskets. More of a PITA job than anything dramatic.

I ended up dropping my whole exhaust system along with both the headers to fix all the little leaks. I had some broken welds and hairline cracks on both headers. I never would have seen them without taking them off. A little welding did the trick.

Oh yeah....it was a PITA and I wouldn't have caught it except for the fact that I was trying to even out my gas trims and they were bouncing around all over the place, indicating an exhaust leak...
