    Default Chinaman Gulch

I finally have a Saturday off from work so I'm going wheeling

    Chinaman Gulch - Saturday 11/26/11
Meet at the Gunsmoke Truck Stop at 9:00 am in Johnson Village/Buena Vista.
    Trail description HERE
    CB Channel 11

DENVER AREA MEETING PLACE AND TIME:

    Conifer Safeway/Starbucks:

Hwy 285 through Aspen Park, staying in right hand lane. After passing the ACE hardware on the right, the next right turn is Conifer Parkway. Take that, go left at the intersection, go right at the next intersection. Safeway is above you on your left.

Get to the Safeway early enough to gas up/food up, etc and be ready to leave by 7:00AM. It is roughly a 2 hour drive to the Gunsmoke from the Safeway lot allowing for a sort stop in Fairplay.

Pack a lunch & we'll have some fun

    Who's in?

Is it snowed in there? Could get tough if it's snowed in. I might be in if it's not though!

Actually, this trail rarely gets snowed in. While there may be a few inches here & there, I've never know it to be impassable because of too much snow. This trail is considered a year round trail. Believe me, I'm not the kind of wheeler that likes to drive 20 ft, winch 20 ft, drive 20 ft, winch 20ft, in deeeeeeeeep snow & keep repeating as necessary

    Hey Chase

Go though our old trail reports and look at the Old Chinaman's Gulch ones.

For the most part and allowing for dry (ish) conditions, you actually have only one or two obstacles that will cause you some body damage if not done correctly. Sure, it would be nice to have skids, but I have seen it run with vehicles without them. As had been mentioned: drive carefully...

Well, i took a look at some trail reports, and saw in each one that a car had rolled, hopefully a spotter error. i am very confident in my driving ability's, but this trail does look a little sketchy.

Chase-if you roll, we will leave you at least a couple of Twizzlers and some water...

Most of those were probably due to driver/spotter error. I have righted more than a couple of rigs there. Almost all of them were from driver or spotter errors and all were from taking a hard line. You listen to and watch your spotter and drive carefully. You are already ahead of the game.

Haku rolled in a spot that LaDawn and I almost drove through. I started to go through it, didn't like the looks of where the holes were in relation to where my wheels are located under my heap, got out, looked again and drove around it. Haku drove through the same spot the next week and flopped his rig (same wheelbase). It was a 'sucker' set of holes, set just enough apart so that a longer wheelbase rig was going to drop both wheels into deep holes at the exact same time.

I righted a flopped Disco ( We were following a but of Rover guys, another group) who managed to flop on the Whale's Tale obstacle. For some reason, the guy didn't straddle the 'V', set his driver's side tires in it, and carefully flopped it over...That was driver error.

At any rate, there are other videos out there that show people with mostly stock rigs getting through that with no issues. There is a pinch at the start where you have to do some careful driving over, around and through some boulders. There is also the Whale's Tale with the easiest line straddling the V.

There are enough people on here that have run it in near stock rigs without issues. Like I said, you are a careful driver, and that is a large part of driving any trail well.

We are going to try to arrange everything so that this works for us, too. It happens to be one of our favorite trails because it isn't a giveaway, is about as hard as you want to make it, and the weather is usually good no matter when you go. Plus you have the opportunity to watch people trash their rigs on both the start and finish of Carnage.

This is also another trail where a large group tends to get very cumbersome and in the way. If there are a lot of rigs, it may be worthwhile to split people up into 5-6 rig groups and space them about 10 minutes apart with agreed upon meet up places for breaks or lunch.

With spotters, that can help eliminate the possibility of that happening but there's always a possibility of damage any time your wheeling, anywhere.

It's one of my favorites too for the same reasons.

To give an idea of some of the obstacles, here’s some pics in order of the obstacles & a brief description………

The “Squeeze“. This one is done twice, on the way in & on the way out. No bypass for this one but it’s not much of a squeeze anymore. The big rocks got pushed outward. Spotting may be required so as not to dent sheet metal or rocker panels depending on line taken and/or ground clearance…………..

It can get a little tippy going down this hill if you put your tires in the wrong hole like I did but to the right of the holes, is smooth so it can be bypassed. This hill is steeper than it looks in the pic. This is done downhill on the way in & uphill on the way out……..

The “Rock Garden“. This is an optional playground off to the side…………

The infamous, “Whale Rock“. No bypass. The middle line is doable by most every rig but there are holes at the bottom that can make a front bumper kiss the rock. The line to the right is the easiest but still no walk in the park. The line to the left is the hardest.

    Right line………..

    Middle line………..

    Left Line……….

The “Stair Steppers“, I don’t know the official name of this obstacle but that’s what I’ve heard it called. This obstacle is optional, it has a smooth/level bypass. It’s not very friendly for long wheelbase rigs but taking certain line(s) can eliminate the possibility of bending a driveshaft. The lines to the left side are steeper & higher……….

The “V Notch”. No bypass. This one has a deep groove in it to where if the tires slip into it, the possibility of driveshaft & differential bashing can occur. At some point, someone moved the boulder on the left side so this one is actually easier than it used to be when trying to avoid body damage. It can get a little tippy if you go too high like I did……..

The “S Turn”. No bypass. This one turns as your going downhill. There are a couple holes the tires can go into which causes some 3 wheeling action on some rigs unless the rig has lots of flex like this one does…………..

    Here - I'll add a few

    Middle line Whale's Tail

Left - hard line Whale's Tail

    Squeeze

Stock Ford truck - he did get some body damage but did not care
This is the Whale's Tail in sloppy mud/snow

V-Notch as it used to be
