Default OMG / Russel Gulch / Apex- Ghost Town & Cemeterys

OMG rd. / Virginia Canyon rd. to Russel Gulch Ghost Town & Exploring spurs in the area; leaving via Russel Gulch rd. or Alps Hill rd., whatever looks better at the time. First a quick detour left to Bald Mtn. Cemetery, then back and up Kings Flats rd. to 3 others- Catholic, City and Independent Order of Oddfellows- finally out via Upper Apex rd to Apex Valley rd to 119. You can follow that track on the trailhead map on traildamage.com pretty easily.

Meet at the Russel Ghost Townsite on OMG / Virginia Canyon rd around 12-1:00, it is a huge photo op so a casual meeting time is easy. If anyone want to do Oh My God rd first from the Idaho Springs side you can meet up there earlier.

    Directions:
From Eureka Street in Central City, take Virginia Canyon Road up and out of town. This is also known as Oh-My-God Road. You will see the colorful town of Russell Gulch 2.4 miles down this easy road from Central City. Turn left on Upper Russell Gulch Road to visit the town and explore the trails.

To do Oh-My-God Road first, meet at the McDonald's or Starbucks in Idaho Springs. Russell Gulch is about 6 miles from Idaho Springs if you take the easy route.

My wife and I have wanted to see the cemeterys in this area since we did Yankee Hill earlier this year and met up by them. Russel Gulch is a big, well preserved Ghost town, and the spurs around it look like fun to wheel, and are full of mining relics, so we figured it would make a fun addition to the cemeterys. We have to work in the morning and will be leaving Denver around 10:30-11:00, we're hoping the light will be pretty good in the afternoon for photos. This run is as much about photos as Jeeping, we plan to stop a lot and probabaly won't need to air down. Should be very stocker friendly, and who knows, we may be surprised with some more challenging trails. Russel Gulch is rated 2-3, and Apex Road is rated a 1 in the Wells books.

That is a cool loop! Very interesting history in the cemeteries up there. My son did a bit of research after one trip up there and found out about some disease outbreaks and mining accidents that explained date of death clusters.

It is a cool loop, for sure! Alot of the gravesites are babies and very young children, really sad actually, but that was the times. Have a great time Paul & co.

Barb and I have spent some time visiting the cemeteries, very insightful of just how hard mountain life was back them.

Cemeteries... when I was posting this I spelled it cemetary, and it kept sticking out at me, so I googled it and fixed it... now I see I pluralized it incorrectly too. My lazy ass should have googled that too. I have no excuse, Rob gets a free punch on me next trail run.

What time to meet at McDonalds... I have definitely gotten more into the "destination" four wheel driving as of late as opposed to just doing trails for trails. Cemeteries are my wife's favorites...

Done it, Central City last April. I suggest waiting for a full moon for light, if possible, and the earlier the better. We went when the ground was snow-covered. We did not go into the mail cemetery because it would be pretty stupid to head uphill with no light or indications of trenches, holes, and other ankle-breakers.

I don't think that would be necessary to scare her, but it may not be in the other person's best interest. Just sayin'.

The area is ominous enough really, without hiding out. Or, it could be that I am just a weenie when it comes to this kind of thing.

That's for sure. I am not one for creepy places/things. I've hurt some haunted house people that have come after me with chain saws.

While it was never positively verified my daughter is said to have broken the arm of a haunted house employee when she was in high school.

I guess teaching her to defend herself when threatened worked.
