Easy way to Make Gaskets
When you are in need of a simple gasket and parts stores are out of them you can make them yourself using some basic tools i.e. , ink pen/marker, scissors and a hammer preferably a ball peen hammer, and gasket material. There are several types of gasket materials out there right now from paper to white plastics, so knowing what type of material you need is probably the hardest part of this. Gasket materials come in various thickness' too so you want to try and come as close to the original thickness as possible especially on certain parts. Now for the rear axle flange gaskets I made that last step was not so important to cause any problems. The material used in this section was a rubber based paper which cuts fairly easy. For cork material it is best to used Gasket punches to cut the material same for harder materials, on Plastic materials is best done with a drill and bits and a band saw for thicker gauges. It should be noted this is not recommended for gaskets like head gasktes where the materials are rated for a certain amount of crush thickness.
Definitions;
Gasket
A gasket is a compressible material, or a combination of materials, which when clamped between two stationary members prevents the passage of the fluid across these members. To prevent passage of fluid, the gasket must be able to flow into (and fill) any irregularities in the mating surfaces being sealed, while at the same time be sufficiently resilient to resist extrusion and creep under operating conditions. The seal is effected by the action of force upon the gasket surface (usually by bolts), which compresses the gasket, causing it to flow into any surface imperfections.
Gasket Materials
Wide varieties of materials are used in the manufacture of gaskets. This section is aimed at providing a brief overview of the common materials. For simplicity they are divided into 4 parts.
• Elastomeric materials
• Fibrous materials
• Other materials
• Metallic materials
Elastomeric materials
They are the “entry level” to sheet sealing products. More commonly, they act as the binder when compounded with various fibres and fillers. They are made in various composition (hence performance) and are available in specification grade and commercial quality.
1st picture is a diagram of the gaskets I made I needed four of them total.
2nd picture is of the axle flange itself, make sure it is clean and free of any debris.
3rd is basic shape cut out
4th & 5th is use the ball peen hammer to indent the gasket where each bolt hole is located
6th after indenting the gasket it actually cuts the gasket leaving the plug(waste material) in the bolt hole
