You might consider Rustoleim textured black, basically blends with most powder coat, I use it for touching up on mine. If you are going to use rivnuts and need the tool, let me know."

I've got 16 holes - going to use traditional flanged bolt and lock nut (in black phosphate). Will look into the textured paint - hoping tomorrow will work for painting with dry and warm weather.

Love drilling holes in my jeep

Finished product (for now) - will probably pull them off at some point and clean up/replace some of the welds etc and repaint

Now to put them to use on Sat - well hopefully not, but should be a bit less stressful on some of the rock steps.

Here is a smaller, lower effort upgrade...Drink holders in my old cj are kind of difficult - it usually involves my wife holding it and giving it back and forth. A member of the earlycj5 forum figured out the the HF magnetic spray can holder (https://www.harborfreight.com/magnet...der-69320.html) works really well to stick on the dash without having to permanently modify anything. There are 6 base magnets that even have a vinyl covering that keeps them from scratching the metal. For 9.99 and 20% off it should work well...haven't decided if I should paint it black...

Match your body paint - teal is it?

edit: If the factory magnets aren't sufficient, I have a SLEW of hard drive magnets that should tend the task.

If that doesn't work out, I've used bicycle water bottle holders. Zip ties, velcro or just two sheet metal screws can attach it to the steering column, roll bar or wherever.

I think my mission this afternoon was to make the ugliest steering components I could for the little blue shop truck. I have gotten the itch to get out of the shop and play. But am sick of destroying my steering since I went to hydro assist. With the front axle moved as far forward as it is, even with the steering box moved farther forward, the links (tie rod and draglink) are too close together. This isn't an issue until you add a mount for the ram into the mix. And I have bent two tie rods over the past 2 years, just by trying to continue to steer after I have gotten into a bind. So I am going to a clamp on mount so I can carry spare tie rods without needing them to have the mount welded on. But in order to do so I needed to make a shorter pitman arm to make more clearance between the two links. And that's where the ugly comes. Here are a couple photos to let you all have a good laugh:

The old tie rod, note the decent bend right near the ram mounting bracket:

    Threaded new tube:

    New clamp:

Stops as to not entirely rely on the clamp:

Welded a threaded rod onto the clamp for the mount:

Welded the stop into place and bolted the clamp on:

Machined a tapered bushing for one side of the custom shorty pitman arm and purchased the splined part and made them into one part:

Coated everything with primer and paint. Hope to be able to find time tomorrow to install it all.

    Nice looking welds!

Not a critical question - flatly curious - why use the clamp on part with a welded part onto the clamp-on part? Skip the clamp piece and just weld the mount directly onto the rod? Does the clamp-on part make replacement easier?
