One individual commented on the article that, when on a trail like this, the driver should NOT wear a seat belt in order to facilitate "bailing" out of the vehicle if things go bad. Idiot.

I read the Denver Post article, no mention of a FS Road number there either.

My only comment about the comments: If it's time for me to go home, rescuers will find me strapped in where I belong. After that my life insurance can pony up and my wife should never be homeless.

I think the only trail above the lake is Saxon Mountain Road, which is County Road 712 most of the way up, then becomes FS Road 712.1.

I agree Rob, it's an easy road but does have some serious drops between switchbacks.

...and more erosion with every season.

Having participated in adopt-a-road days for FS 712, I've written up areas on the switchbacks, only to learn that the county is responsible for that work.

This year, I opted to focus on the section that we officially monitor. At the Ranger Station I was asked if we ran the switchbacks; someone reported the switchbacks as barely passable. I drove away feeling a little frustrated.

    It only gets worse:

Very tragic. Thank God her kids were not involved. My heart goes out to them more than anyone. With regards to the seat belt, YES - wear it at all times, but we can't rush to judgement when we don't know the whole story. It could be that she took it off to get out of the Jeep and then things went bad. RIP.

Seatbelts make sense. Natural selection makes sense, too.

The switchbacks on Saxon Mountain road are both serious and steep. I don't even think they are very much fun, so I usually go down Ute Creek (or something else)on the other side of the mountain after running Spring Creek. If I ever have to stop on a steep hillside for whatever reason, I usually set my E brake and block one or two wheels, plus turn the tires so that they aren't pointing down the slope. Best not to stop at all where running off the side is an issue and this seems a sad way to learn basic common sense stuff.

Most of us only learn from experience and experience is a ruthless, barbaric ***** of a teacher....

Sad to hear, Last time I did Saxon it was a bit un-nerving due to the drop offs especially at the rock over hang where it is tippy. I hope her family is doing as good as can be expected, and hopefully she enjoyed wheeling while she could. RIP!

Last time I did Saxxon (last year) I don't remember ever being tippy on the switchbacks at all.

This is the tippy section I was talking about.

You have to remember, Sean feels more of the trail with his Torsion bars cranked up.

Ran across this on Rising Sun, I don't know the accuracy but thought I'd pass it on.

    Dear Father Sean,

I have to tell you that beautiful Crystal was killed Friday afternoon in Colorado. Marcus and Crystal were driving up in the mountains as they went out together every Friday. Somehow Marcus got out of the jeep to check the 4-wheel drive and with that the car went over the cliff and plunged 1300 feet down the mountain. Marcus went looking for her and was picked up by the rangers and brought to the hospital as he was injured climbing down the mountain. She was only 29 years old. They have two beautiful boys, Liam age 5 and Tristan age 4. I had to share this with you as you married them and remember it was such a beautiful wedding. Well you married them till death do them part. We are all going to the funeral in Colorado when Marcus decides what to do as I think he is still in shock. Thanks for letting me share my broken heart with you at this time.
