Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Dave, what is Schubert loop? I see a Schubert trail that heads east from Rampart but looks like it dead ends. Picture of what I see on Trailsoffroad.
This is still 2 1/2 weeks away so I’m going to make every effort to join even if it’s Schubarth!
Im pretty sure Bill Moore lake will be closed
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Schubarth on New Years is still one of my favorite runs. Wish I could make it but I’ll be out of town this year.
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
If you have a Funtreks book it has a map that shows the loop. I have ran this a couple of times in some significant snow. Pretty fun both times. It remains one of my favorite trails.
The problem is it is a pretty long trek for our northern members.

Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
It is one I'd well consider making the trek to run. I never have (nor the gulches). The trail that has Little Moab is perhaps the only trail in that area I have visited.
I'm well undecided what I'm going to do this Christmas / New Year season. Part of me wants to sit around the house. Part of me says - make a trek to Moab / Southern Utah and poke here-and-there. Part of me says - drive back to Illinois. Choices. It'll likely be a last minute - how the wind blows - decision.
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
hi i will be going. i know i will have two people riding with me. maybe more the family is not sure if they want to go or not. the best part is i dont work all night like i usually do. am pretty stoked to be going. i dont get to use my rig as much because of family but that's ok with me. it makes it more fun when i do get to go play
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Pretty sure I can make this one. Thanks for posting it, David!
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Why don’t we run the Gulches? I’ve run Hackett a couple times, amazing trail! Have yet to run Longwater or Metburry and this would be a little closer (although not close) for us northern folks. Just an idea…..
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
i'm most likely in for whatever trail we choose

I love the Gulches, they are always passable in winter, not too high and open. Those who have not done will not be disappointed, some of the best scenic trails in CO. Hackett is the hard one while Metberry and Longwater are a bit easier. Even the Cedar Mountain road used to get to the trail heads is great.

Yes, Cedar Mountain road is a great trail that leads to the trailheads of the gulches. I remember it being quite snowy and icy when I last went, Cedar Mountain road was still easy but had an element of adventure to it. Hackett is just a BLAST, but I would really like to run Longwater at some point ;)
I'm down for anything but just thought this might be a good option also!
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Hackett was my very first run :)

I remember winching you out of the frozen creek! That was fun!
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
lol yeah i had no recovery points and no traction with the ice/water with the perfectly bad wheel base in those 2 holes through the ice. my truck has come a long way since then and am happy to not only have recovery points but a winch too!
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Is Hackett the one with the really steep rock face? No way I would try that if it was even wet out.
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
I thought they closed those trails? (Gulches) I thought Metberry was the only one that doesn't cross the county line. But they would be my first choice if it wasn't to snowy. They are pretty steep in some places.
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Nope, they aren't closed according to trailsoffroad, and they are on top of most trail closures so I trust these trails are currently open.
Shane, that steep rock face is not that hard........ just a little sketchy ;)
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
I climbed right up in in my Range Rover, but didn't think I would have made it in the rain. Could just me being chicken.

The first time I ran Longwater Gulch I didn't bother to air down. On the way back it started rain lightly. Just enough to make it so I couldn't keep any momentum once I got through the
Dug out at the bottom. (Manual tranny) we were running out out daylight and My wife wasn't haven it. So I winched up until I could get a grip. My buddy had an automatic and once he
got oonto the rock face he had no issue making it up. If the Gulches are open I'm game to do that? If everyone wants to.
Re: New Years day? Run anyone?
Oh yeah, winches, I forget about those some days. The snow should help jog my memory.

that face is typically always dry, unless its raining of course, which rarely happens here, if you have a rear locker is should be no issue.
